One More Thing

I was talking with a very accomplished woman today.  She said to me “I can’t handle one more thing.”  A wife, mother and leader in her industry, her life is full, filled with all the good, bad and ugly that come with everyday life.  She can be sitting in C-Suite meetings one hour and picking up dog poop on a walk the next hour.  She can be entertaining business partners in a city 2,000 miles away and 24 hours later sitting at one of her children’s games.

And she can’t handle one more thing.  Not an extra email, an appointment on her calendar, an extra responsibility (even if it seems like the smallest thing).  She’s done.  Sound familiar?

We all have faced these moments in our lives.  These points are exhausting.

A few offerings

*Congratulate yourself for knowing when you’ve reached your limit.

*Understand that this is just a brief point in time.  It will smooth out, it will get better.

*Triage your situation by delegating at least one item on your daily list to someone else.  Anything from answering an email to taking out the garbage.  Try and slow down.  Become intentional about everything you do in your day.  Slowing down helps your brain and body to self-regulate.

*Take care of yourself.  Extra sleep, good nutrition and going easy on alcohol are as effective as any therapy to see you through a stressful period.
