Best Practices for Non Profit Board Chairs

Allow me to introduce myself!

I have had close to three decades of non-profit board service in leadership roles.  Through service to worthy organizations, I’ve helped to raise millions of dollars, built organizations from the ground up and revitalized existing foundations. Throughout my years I’ve met many kind and smart human beings with a shared passion for giving back and I’ve learned a LOT about chairing a board.

I am a firm believer in leading with kindness, vulnerability, accountability, and investing in people and systems.  The organizations I’ve led have achieved measurable success in fulfilling their missions.

Board service can be immensely fulfilling.  And it also can be soul-crushing: unproductive meetings, board members who don’t understand their role and tension between the executive director and the board to name a few things.  I’m eager to share what I’ve learned so board chairs can lead both with kindness and effectiveness.

I’ll be posting short articles in the coming weeks about best practices for board chairs.  Here’s a few topics:

*Why board chairs should operate at 30,000 feet.

*Don’t have board norms?  You should!

*How to have conversations with misbehaving board members.

I’m looking forward to sharing and exchanging ideas in the coming weeks!
